Upon graduating from Illinois State University, Chris Murphy taught high school science and coached baseball in Chicago Public Schools, during which time he earned Masters' degrees in education from DePaul University and Northeastern Illinois University. While serving as a principal in the Chicago suburbs, he earned his Doctorate in Education from National-Louis University with research focused on Social Change Theory. Dr. Murphy first joined Concept Schools, a non-profit charter management organization that provides comprehensive academic, operational, and financial services, in 2016. As Chief Strategic Growth and Communications Officer, he oversees Network Growth and Sustainability, Marketing, Community and Media Relations, and Charter School Advocacy. Dr. Murphy is a founding group member of the Horizon Science Academy Des Moines charter public school. HSA Des Moines will open in Fall 2023 as a tuition-free and non-selective elementary school that will enroll roughly 200 Kindergarten-3rd grade students. He deeply believes in the potential of all students and is committed to expanding high-quality free educational opportunities for low-income and minority students.

Michelle Book has served as president and CEO of Food Bank of Iowa since 2016. Under her leadership, Food Bank of Iowa has transformed from once underperforming to being recognized as a Feeding American food bank of excellence with the Network Celebration Award in 2022 and the Living 0ur Values award in 2023. Prior to joining Food Bank of Iowa, Miichelle traveled the world leading global community engagement for DuPont Pioneer and serving as a global compliance manager for John Deere Finance. Before that and at various times, she has been a bean walker, hay baler, hog producer, auditor, and controller. Michelle earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in accounting from Iowa State University. She was formerly a licensed Certified Public Accountant and Certified International Auditor. Michelle has been recognized by the Des Moines Business Record as a Woman of Influence, a "leader to know," and among the metro's top 25 Most Influential Business Leaders. In 2019, Michele was an Iowa State University Alumni Lifetime Achievement Awardee. And in 2021, she proudly accepted the Bell Tower of Fame Award from her hometime of Jefferson, Iowa. Michelle is the mother of two adult children and grandmother of three grandsons. She lives in Des Moines with a big, happy Goldendoodle and enjoys practicing yoga, spending time outdoors, creating in the kitchen, and learning by reading.

David Oman, Iowa Caucus Historian & Business Consultant David Oman served in the Iowa Governor’s Office for ten years, the last Chief of Staff for the late Governor Robert Ray, and the first Chief of Staff for Governor Terry Branstad. He is the only Iowan to serve as Chief of Staff for two Governors. David is a Cedar Falls native and a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa. He began his career as a broadcast journalist including two years as a weekend news anchor for KWWL-TV in Waterloo. Later, upon leaving state government, David was an executive in the cable television industry, working in Des Moines and Denver, CO. During his business career, David was elected four times as Co-Chair of the Iowa Republican Party and played a role in keeping our Presidential caucuses ‘First in the Nation’. David finished second in the GOP primary for governor in 1998. After the general election, new Governor Tom Vilsack, a Democrat, asked David to chair a 37-member bipartisan Strategic Planning Council. Its lead recommendation was that our state purposefully grow its population by expanding legal immigration – an issue timely today. An environmentalist, David is a past chair of the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. He served on boards of the Iowa Health System (now Unity Point), Iowa ABI, and the UNI Foundation, for which he currently consults the expanding UNI@DMACC and UNI@Iowa Community College programs. David is the father of two sons, Christopher, in Washington, D.C., and Graham, in Phoenix. |

Ben was named director of the Des Moines Park and Recreation Department in November of 2012. He is responsible for, a $15 million operating budget and a six-year $50+ million capital improvement program; 60 full-time and over 300 part-time employees; multiple contracts, leases, and operating agreements to provide privatized service; 77 parks and open spaces; over 4,000 acres of park and open space land; 69 miles of paved trails; 3 golf courses; aquatic centers and beach; marina; community recreation centers; sports complexes; performing arts amphitheaters; world-class artists sculpture park; riverwalk; AAA baseball stadium; zoological park; botanical center; city-wide streetscapes; cemeteries; skating plaza; and recreational programming. The department was recognized in 2023 with the National Recreation and Parks Association Gold Medal, an award given annually to only 4 cities, divided into 4 population categories that demonstrate excellence in long-range planning, resource management, and innovative approaches to delivering superb park and recreation services with fiscally sound business practices. On October 9, 2023, Ben began a 3-year term on the National Recreation and Parks Association Board of Directors, serving as 1 of 30 professionals who have the honor to be on the board.

Noelle Nelson serves as Executive Director of Avenue Scholars Des Moines. Noelle graduated from Simpson College with a BA in Elem Education, as well as MAs from Viterbo University and University of Iowa. She also graduated from Drake University with a Specialist Degree and Superintendent’s License. Noelle spent the past 23 years serving as a teacher, curriculum coordinator, administrator, and most recently, as Executive Director of Leadership and Learning, for Des Moines Public Schools. She is passionate about equity of access for all scholars and has committed her career to removing barriers for our most marginalized groups. |

Rev. Rob Johnson is a passionate advocate for this community and has been since he arrived in Des Moines in 2006. He is a prominent leader with the Iowa Juneteenth, Back 2 School Iowa, and many other organizations. He is a dedicated volunteer with local churches and Faith Organizations. He is the visionary behind initiatives such as the Code R.E.D. mental health forums, The Urban Impact Show (a program highlighting people of color and history makers), and the Rob Johnson Birthday Gas Giveaway which has garnered over 7.8 million views nationwide with a guest appearance on the Kelly Clarkson National Television Show. These are just a few of the numerous roles Rev. Rob passionately embraces to create a positive impact for Iowa. Rev. Rob is a Dad, an Uncle, a Son, a Brother, and friend to Iowa.
